NATIONAL ICON THE HONORABLE HARVEY B. GANTT KEYNOTE SPEAKER

"UNITY BREAKFAST"
The Renaissance Foundation and its partners cordially invites you to a "Unity Breakfast" on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 8a.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center to celebrate the upcoming restoration and transformation of historic Bethel inot a Cultural Arts Center in Downtown Columbia.
The keynote speaker will be the Honorable Harvey B. Gantt, a "National Icon".
In 1963, Mr. Gantt was the first African-American to attend Clemson University.
In 1971 he co-founded Gantt Huberman Architects.
He was the first African-American Mayor of Charlotte, NC in 1983.
The United Black Fund inducted him into the Hall of Fame in 1991.
In 1990 and 1996, Mr. Gantt gained national attention again when he challenged U.S. Senator Jesse Helms for the Senate position in North Carolina.
The Charlotte Post awarded him with the "Lifetime Achievement Award" in 2007.
In 2008, the Charlotte Center City Partners awarded him with the "Vision Award".
Recently, the Afro-American Cultural Arts Center named their new facilty The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts and Culture in his honor.

SOUTH CAROLINA UBF HALL OF FAME FINDS A PERMANENT HOME
at The Renaissance Foundation Cultural Arts Center
The United Black Fund of the Midlands has entered into a partnership with the Renaissance Foundation to provide the South Carolina Black Hall of Fame with a permanent home.
The Cultural Arts Center will provide a fitting backdrop for the accomplishments for more than 200 Hall of Fame inductees.

AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN GENIUS SPOKE IN COLUMBIA ON DECEMBER 1, 2006
Ralph Gilles Vice President - Jeep/Truck and Component Design, Chrysler Group spoke eloquently at an Appreciation Breakfast Honoring Midlands Art Students.
On Friday, December 1, 2006 The Renaissance Foundation hosted an appreciation breakfast for college students representing colleges and universities throughout the Midlands (Benedict College, Columbia College, Claflin University and the University of South Carolina) who created the artwork for historic Bethel.
The artwork was in the form of murals created to temporarily replace the stained glass windows at historic Bethel in downtown Columbia

The replacement artwork will be displayed at historic Bethel until it is fully transformed into a cultural arts center.
The breakfast was successful and held at 8:30 am at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center and Visitors Bureau.
The speaker for the event was Mr. Ralph Gilles, Vice President - Jeep/Truck and Component Design, Chrysler Group.
Gilles is also the lead designer of the Chrysler 300C.
Mr. Gilles spoke to visiting students from all over the state after breakfast at 11:00am, and then attended an exclusive lunch at The Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce.
He also visited Heyward Career Center and enlightened the students and he personally answered their questions and signed autographs.

RENAISSANCE FOUNDATION RESTORES HISTORIC BETHEL
Historic Bethel AME to become a Cultural Arts Center
Moved by the proud and illustrious history of historic Bethel, which is on the National Historic Register, the Renaissance Foundation plans to utilize historic Bethel as an arts venue to bring communities together and to establish a common ground for diversity.
The Renaissance Cultural Arts Center, as it is called, is under the leadership of the Renaissance Foundation.
Our vision is to renovate this historical building and create a one-of-a-kind, 500 to 600-seat performing arts facility that will enhance Columbia City Center's inventory of venues offering a variety of events that will attract a diverse audience to the museum and performing arts venue for local, state and national artists.
The Renaissance Cultural Arts Center is centrally located in downtown Columbia and allows easy access to hotels, restaurants, and shops in the area.
