THE RENAISSANCE FOUNDATION
RENAISSANCE FOUNDATION CULTURAL ARTS CENTER
APRIL 2007 PROJECT UPDATE

To date, The Renaissance Foundation has implemented two of the three phases of the project. Phase One stabilization of the building and Phase Two engaged students from several area colleges including the University of South Carolina, Columbia College, Benedict College and Claflin University:

-     Phase One - stabilization of the building with the installation of a new roof to prevent further deterioration and the removal of the original stained glass windows to be restored. The stained glass windows will be reinstalled once the building is complete.

-     Phase Two - engaged students in the creation of murals that would serve as temporary replacement for the stained glass windows while the stained glass is restored. The students participating in the project had no prior knowledge of the history of historic Bethel or its architect, John Anderson Lankford, learning about both from their instructors and from doing research. These students, made up of significantly different backgrounds, were then given a blank canvass to create the murals and were encouraged to use their mind’s eye. Each was provided with the Project Concept for the Center and the history of the architect. They were able to blend the concept and history of the project together in the most colorful and magnificent murals; and, more importantly, as artists, they appreciated each other’s work. This artistic centerpiece was created for all to enjoy during the restoration process and an exciting avenue to engage students in the project. Without a doubt, their work has become an artistic centerpiece in downtown Columbia.

-     Ongoing entails the collection of artifacts and documents as a means of telling the story through the creation of a book. The purpose for this book is to chronicle the African American faith community and the role played by the church and by their notable parishioners in the areas of education, civil rights and the arts. For example, over 150 South Carolinians recognized in the United Black Funds “Hall of Fame” will be included in the book. This collection was presented to The Renaissance Foundation as a contribution to the museum. College students will be paired with members of The Renaissance Foundation’s Historical Research Committee, which is made up of members of historic Bethel and range in age from 78 to 98 years old. Their working together not only provides students an opportunity to participate in a historical project but also to participate in a cross-cultural learning experience, in addition to an opportunity to connect with the elder generation.

-     Phase Three - construction in which the building will be transformed into a Cultural Arts Center, thereby preserving this historical site.
